WAC - 2011
This year, students will explore the theme Food: Feeding the World Sustainably in the 21st Century
Students will study Food and Water in our globalized world and use the theme as a lens for exploring some of the most pressing contemporary issues: economics and trade, resource distribution, human rights and the health of people and the planet. They’ll explore these topics on a local, national and international level, and seek actionable solutions.
Some guiding questions for WAC participants in 2011 will include...
- Where does my food come from? Is it safe? Healthy? Nutritious? Ethical?
- What is the relationship between food/ water access and race and class? Human rights?
- How did the food production evolve over time, locally and globally? (e.g. GMO)
- Who is responsible for the kind of food I have access to? What’s the landscape of local food production? How does it fit in the global food distribution?
- What role does food play in different cultures? What can be done to ensure sustainable food production AND preserving different food cultures?
- What changes would I like to see in food access in my community and the world?
- What are some common goals for food production? How do these goals vary in different regions and why? What projects people are working towards similar goals? What can we do to achieve these ends?
