Global Youth Media and Arts Festival 2007-08
Youth address the theme “Power in a Global Society”
Professional Development Lunches
MAP teachers, professional artists and media makers meet at the beginning, middle and end of the program to address the theme, plan curriculum, network and prepare for the final festival exhibition and performances.
MAP Workshops
Youth from 22 San Francisco organizations participated in workshops and addressed Power in a Global Society. They looked to revolutionaries throughout history to created their own manifestos, examined how power structures impact our environment though ecological footprints and heard from female hip hop artists about gender and power in the music industry.
Artist Collaborations
World Savvy hires professional artists to work with youth around the theme by hosting field trips. Theo Rigby, an independent photojournalist led workshops with MAP youth discussing photography and censorship in the media. Jon Brumit is an interdisciplinary artist who invited youth to his solo exhibition at the Lisa Dent Gallery to share creative ideas on how we can preserve our environment and be creative with available resources in the event of flooding due to global warming. Both workshops engaged youth in discussions, viewed the artists work, heard stories from the artists, and made their own art with the guidance of the World Savvy staff, the artists and their teachers.
Jam Session
World Savvy organized a Saturday Jam Session for MAP youth come together and address the theme in hands on workshops, getting to know one another and building community while working with local teaching artists and media professionals.
Power Panels and Film Screenings
This year, World Savvy expanded the MAP to include more community members in the discussion about Power in a Global Society with youth. One panel was a collaboration with Just Think. At the SF Public library, we screened Third Monday in October, a film documenting American middle school students as they campaigned and ran for class president. We had a timely discussion on the power of popularity in politics and voting. The second panel was entitled “Power and Technology: How does the power of technology affect youth participation as citizens today?” Panelists included adults from Just Think, You Tube, Google, Stanford, Mobile Voter and youth from ZeumMasters. Perspectives on the topic were broadly addressed and involved the audience with cell phone and web based interactive technologies.
MAP Festival Exhibition and Opening Celebration
Participating youth created interdisciplinary artworks around the theme to be in a 2 month visual exhibition at Zeum, An Arts & Technology Museum for Kids and Families. With a fantastic keynote performance from headRush, youth, their teachers, family and community members engaged with the theme and celebrated the youth’s creative successes!
MAP Festival Performances
MAP performing arts partners prepared innovative performances addressing Power in a Global Society using original poetry, spoken word, musical composition, and theatrical acrobatics. This diverse presentation took place at the Zeum Theater. Click on these two buttons to see video of two performances by Opera Piccola/IGO and Acro Sports!
School Fieldtrips at Zeum
Schools that participate in the Global Educators Program are invited to schedule fieldtrips to Zeum to address the MAP theme as well! There, they have the opportunity to view the MAP visual exhibition and work with Zeum Staff to make their own artwork on an element of Power in a Global Society. Here are photos from Roosevelt Middle School making video blogs about the ecological footprint!
