GEP - School Partnerships

Philip and Sala Burton Academic High School, San Francisco
- Students in Eric Chow’s journalism class are participating in the Media and Arts Program, and about 20 students participated on Saturday, March 21, in the student jam session. See the projects students are creating in the journalism class.
- Support for 9th grade Leadership Course, which integrates themes of leadership and community, while covering issues such as culture, immigration and identity, globalization and environment.
- On April 3, acclaimed youth author, Mitali Perkins, will be speaking to 9th graders about “life between cultures”.
International Studies Academy (ISA), San Francisco
- A group of middle school students participated in the World Affairs Challenge, researching and creating a presentation on the “brain drain” in Iraq.
- Students in Tiana Pastor’s art classes are participating in the Global Youth Media and Arts Program (MAP), and on Saturday, March 21, ISA was the host school for our annual student “jam session” as part of the MAP.
- For the 5th year, students in Ricardo Elizalde’s 10th grade English class will be completing the International Interview Project. This year they will partner with Intrax, a cultural exchange program in San Francisco, to interview students in their English language programs.
Roots International Academy, Oakland
- For the 3rd year, Roots students participated in the World Affairs Challenge, creating a presentation called “Education for All”, proposing to improve education around the world, to give people the skills to earn a living close to home, and prevent some of the harsh impacts caused by migration. Roots students earned first place for “Most Creative Presentation” at this year’s WAC – congratulations!
- Students in teacher Aaron Zilberman’s humanities classes are participating in the Global Youth Media and Arts Program, and will be writing and performing their own short play about the issues of Immigration and Identity.
- In October 2008, a group of students from Roots visited the Doctors without Borders Refugee Camp exhibit in San Francisco, learning about refugees around the world, and what it’s like to live in a refugee camp. Hear students from Roots being interviewed about the experience.
Youth Empowerment School (YES), Oakland
- Teachers at YES are implementing an academy course focused on food justice issues. Students have researched the issue, and explored access to food in their own neighborhoods. Students will be planning activities for Earth Day on April 22, and teachers in multiple disciplines will be implementing lessons in their own classrooms connected to environmental sustainability and food justice issues.
International School of Monterey (ISM), Seaside
- 7th and 8th graders at ISM participated in the World Affairs Challenge, with groups presenting on topics as varied as trafficking, LGBT refugees fleeing persecution, and refugees caused by tsunamis and floods. ISM students won several awards, for the global awareness quiz and team presentation. See full results.
- Students in Sandy Shephard’s 6th grade advisory class are learning about the issue of child soldiers in the world today, and learning what they can do to take action on this issue.
