World Savvy Signature Professional Development Institutes
High quality professional development institutes are available nationally with half day, full day, or two-day options for groups of 10 or more participants, and are ideal for those seeking comprehensive and innovative teaching strategies and resources to integrate global issues into teaching and learning.
Each Signature Institute includes:
- Interactive professional development focused on real-world strategies for integrating global themes into any classroom using art and media
- World Savvy’s themed Collaborator’s Guide curriculum: Over 100 pages of useful short activities, full lesson plans, multi-day units and field trip plans that are easily adapted to any subject or classroom
- Access to World Savvy’s growing online database of region-specific lesson and field trip plans based on the global theme.
- An invitation to join the World Savvy Global Educators Forum – an online community where middle and high school teachers can share ideas and inspirations, ask questions, and be a part of a lively community of educators dedicated to teaching the next generation of global leaders

World Savvy Signature Institutes enable teachers to approach complex global themes creatively with the arts and media as a lens for their students.
Sustainable Communities
The Sustainable Communities Institute provides participants with the tools and techniques to explore all aspects of 21st Century Sustainability in classrooms, modeling a variety of interactive teaching and learning strategies to engage students in examining issues of sustainable development, energy, food and water, transport and design--- on a local, national and global scale. There are two arts-integration options for this institute:
Option 1 = Forum theater and improvisation
Option 2 = Visual Arts and still life drawing
Sample topics explored in this institute include:
- An overview of local and global sustainability issues contextualized to your local environment;
- Interdisciplinary art and media resources, and identification of local sustainability resources and fieldtrip options;
- Tools and resources for developing your own standards-aligned interdisciplinary curriculum to integrate sustainability issues into your classroom.
Immigration Identity
In this institute, participants will explore historic and contemporary Immigration Identity issues affecting educators and students by examining its impact at the personal, community, and global levels. Drawing from World Savvy’s extensive curriculum and arts resource base, participants will gain new tools and techniques to build students’ global literacy and cultural competency, including interactive teaching strategies and coaching on building supportive learning communities.
Sample topics explored in this institute include:
- Overview of the multiple perspectives of and tools for teaching historic and contemporary U.S. Immigration issues;
- Breaking the Ice: tools for facilitating discussions of challenging topics in the classroom;
- Exploring personal immigration history stories with students;
- Tools and resources for using art and media to facilitate discussion of complex issues of race, ethnicity, stereotyping, and conflict.
Project-Based Learning
The Project Based Learning Institute leads educators on a collaborative, step by step process of developing complete units of curriculum, which integrate media & art, community engagement and student centered inquiry across content areas. The workshop scaffolds a series of activities, through which participants generate opportunities for students, working in groups, to identify what they need to know, and where to access the information that may lead to resolution of a complex, multifaceted, and realistic problem.
