Sustainable Communities

The Sustainable Communities Workshop provides educators with the tools and techniques to explore all aspects of Sustainability in the 21st Century –economic, social and environmental – in their classrooms. This workshop will model a variety of interactive teaching and learning strategies to engage diverse students in an examination of issues such as sustainable development, energy, food and water, transport and design – on a local, national and global scale.

Topics explored in this two-day workshop include:

  • An overview of local and global sustainability issues
  • Going Green in the Classroom – ideas for engaging your students in “greening” your classroom, school, and community
  • Interdisciplinary art and media resources for addressing Sustainability
  • Water Around the World – exploring how water issues around the world impact communities
  • Local sustainability resources – ideas for field trips and locally available resources.

Immigration and Identity

What is my immigration history? What does it mean to belong to a community? How do communities change and transform through immigration? In the Immigration and Identity workshop, participants will explore these questions while gaining new tools and techniques to build students’ global literacy and cultural competency. Drawing on World Savvy’s extensive curriculum and arts resources, this workshop will model interactive teaching strategies, and engage educators in a supportive community of practice.

Topics explored in this two-day workshop include:

  • Breaking the Ice: tools for initiating discussions of challenging topics in your classroom
  • An overview and teaching tools to address the history of Immigration in the US
  • Multiple Perspectives on the current immigration debate in the US
  • Tools for using Art and Media as an entry point to discussing complex issues of race, ethnicity, stereotyping, and communities in conflict
  • Exploring personal immigration history stories with students
