Indian activist Vandana Shiva has likened women’s role in the detection of climate change to that of a canary in a coal mine
– in developing countries especially, they act as de facto testers of
environmental health by virtue of their role in obtaining basic

- They are the first to notice the decreased arability of farm land as crop yields go down and sand replaces soil.
- They are the first to notice water scarcity and water contamination.
