In Their Own Words...

As part of the scholarship application process for the World Affairs Challenge this year, students were asked to write about why they want to participate and how they think it connects with their future goals and ambitions. Below are some of the things students had to say...

“Participating in the World Affairs Challenge will make me more globally aware of issues concerning human migration. Coming from a family with parents that immigrated to the United States... this opportunity is a chance for me to reveal my history and share it with many others the challenges of immigration. This is also another opportunity for me to learn and benefit from other people's cultures and why they or their relatives immigrated to the United States.”

“I am an African refugee. I was born in Somali and lived in Kenyan refugee camps for over five years. I have much experience with African refugee migration as all of my family members have once been refugees. I like talking about history and politics. I am very interested in the World Savvy program and wish to share my story with other people.”

“I want to go to the World Affairs Challenge because I want to learn about speaking skills and how to be a global citizen.”

“To be able to participate in the World Affairs Challenge will make me become a more educated person, globally speaking, and will let me as a person make wiser choices in the future. Especially coming from two parents that were once refugees, I would like to further my knowledge of this issue so that I can help improve the society I live in and enrich the culture I come from, and perhaps educate others with my knowledge.”

“I want to learn more about speaking skills and teamwork. I think these skills can help me when I become a leader in my country.”

“I want to be part of the World Affairs Challenge because I think that working with other age groups is a great way to improve on learning. I think that this is a great program to join because students of all ages get to come together and share ideas and knowledge about what they know about the world.”
