Volunteer - Program & Event Support
World Affairs Challenge
The World Affairs Challenge (WAC) is a unique academic competition in international affairs for middle and high school students. The program incorporates public speaking, dramatic presentation, and group problem solving as students explore issues of global significance. The WAC takes place in both San Francisco and Minneapolis during the spring semester.
In order to put on the WAC, World Savvy asks for help from the community in various ways:
Judges will evaluate students’ Formal Presentations, Collaborative Questions and Discovery Posters and engage in a Q&A with students. Little prior knowledge relating to the theme is required. Anyone with a passion for education and an interest in global issues is encouraged to participate as a judge!
Proctors monitor classrooms and keep track of time for Formal Presentations and Collaborative Questions, moderate a Q&A period after each Formal Presentation and troubleshoot classroom, technology or presentation problems for those two events. No prior knowledge relating to the theme is required.
General Volunteers assist our staff in running the event. Tasks include monitoring classrooms, being responsible for audio-visual equipment, providing information to students, parents and visitors, providing food and refreshments for attendees and participants, etc.
Global Youth Media and Arts Program
The Global Youth Media and Arts Program (MAP) is a six-month partnership between World Savvy and 15 local schools and arts and media organizations. Through these partnerships, World Savvy works with teachers and youth to infuse their curricula with a global theme and create local connections. The MAP takes place in both San Francisco and New York during the spring semester.
In order to put on the MAP, World Savvy asks for help from the community in various ways:
Jam Session Volunteers help with setting up Jam Session materials, greeting and checking-in youth, helping to facilitate Jam Session activities, setting up food, clean up.
Festival Volunteers will help ensure that the exhibition runs smoothly, assist with setup, monitor exhibits/performances, and provide information to students, parents, and visitors.
Global Educators Program
Career Panels
Panels are ad hoc opportunities to speak with high school students about career paths involving international affairs and business or public service.
International Interview Project
World Savvy partners with school teachers to help find foreign nationals or recent immigrants who are willing to be interviewed by students in their class. Students research your home country and learn more about its culture, politics and economics in order to prepare a set of questions for your interview.
Volunteers will be interviewed by a group of about 3-5 students interviewees share stories about life in their home country and their experiences coming to the US; no preparation needed.
Fall Fundraiser & Auction Volunteer
Each fall we host an event to raise money for all of World Savvy's programs. Volunteers are needed in a variety of capacities:
- Pre-event: Collecting auction items, joining the Welcoming Committee, mailing invitations
- Event: Setting up, checking guests in and out, managing the silent auction, cleaning up
