Tips Tuesday: ORBIS

Leave it to the folks in Silicon Valley to collaborate and come up with a super cool, interactive program called ORBIS showing travel in antiquity. Scholars of ancient history and the IT folks from Stanford University combined forces to develop this web based application which allows the user to pick various options to get from point A to point B. Some user defined options include speed (including ox cart and horse relay), aquatic (river or sea) and network (only road or road and sea). From these options, the user will see both the time and cost of travelling through the Roman Empire.
In case you were wondering, it would have taken 33.3 day to travel from Rome to Constantinopolis on foot.
